FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Friends,

It is good to be back from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and The School of Congregational Development. About a dozen persons from our conference attended this school, including three from CrossRoads.

Cathi Johnson, John Rainwater, and I will soon be meeting to review what we learned at the school, and how we might be able to use some of this information for the good of our church. We heard some great speakers and were challenged to be the best church that we can be. Our worship times were of a more contemporary nature, including the new United Methodist Church called CrossWinds, where we worshipped last Sunday.

Judging by the things we learned, CrossRoads is already doing a number of things correctly. It was good to receive that affirmation. There is a strong revitalization going on at a number of United Methodist churches across the country. Some of the things we heard might help such a revitalization to happen in our conference, and at CrossRoads. We will be sharing some of these things with you in the near future.

In other news…please note that our Wednesday morning Bible Study will resume September 3, at 10:00.

Liturgist Training - Wednesday, August 27 at 7:00p.m. for current liturgists and those who are interested in becoming part of the rotation.

Also, don’t forget about the new Young Adult Sunday School Class starting up on September 7. I’ll be teaching this class and we will meet in the conference room next to my office. More about that later.

SHEPHERDS NEEDED!!

For the past year Crossroads UMC has had a group of people that have been involved in trying to make visitors feel welcome as they enter into the narthex. We have a faithful few, but more Shepherds are needed at both the 8:30 and the 11:00 services. Currently we only have one Shepherd at the 8:30 service, and that is Cathi Johnson, but we are looking for at least one or two more Shepherds for this service, as well as more for the 11:00 service. This past year Diana Millican led us, but now she is working with the Acolytes, and has asked to be replaced as Chair of this program. Curtis Hartsfield has graciously accepted that challenge. If you would like to hear more about this program, they will meet after the 11:00 service on August 17, 2008. A snack lunch will be provided for those who are interested.

ASBURY SEEKING A PART-TIME DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Asbury United Methodist Church’s Director of Music Ministries will soon be moving to another state and they are now looking for a qualified and capable replacement for her. This is a part-time position. If you know of anyone who is interested, have him or her call Rev. David Garrett at 901-363-1135.

THANK YOU…..

Thank you all very much for the calls, cards, visits, and prayers during my recent surgery. Your kindness and support helped my family and me during a difficult time. God bless you.

A SPECIAL THANK-YOU TO MY CROSSROADS FAMILY:

When I couldn't do much for myself these past 3 weeks, you met my every need. You fed me, visited me, called me, sent those wonderful cards, and even transported me. In other words, you saved my sanity and that of my poor daughter and daughter-in-law! It was ALMOST worth the pain and frustration just to feel that love and fellowship. You are all very special to me and I love each of you.

FREE CHILDREN’S BOOKS

The Wesley School left behind some children’s books when they vacated the premises. These books will be available to anyone who would like to give them a home on August 24th. Look for a table of books in the gym and help yourself to them. Best of all, THEY ARE FREE!

"Where We See God…"

a Congregational Project

For the past few weeks during worship, we have presented you with a summer project: "Where We See God…". We’ve also included a beautiful theme song – Hymn #111, "How Can We Name a Love". Hear its words (vs. 1, 3 & 4) and keep them close at hand during the coming weeks:

How can we name a Love that wakens heart and mind,

Indwelling all we know or think or do or seek or find?

Within our daily world, in every human face,

Love’s echoes sound and God is found, hid in the commonplace.

When people share a task, and strength and skills unite

In projects old or new, to make or do with shared delight,

Our Friend and Partner’s will is better understood,

That all should share, create, and care, and know that life is good.

So in a hundred names, each day we all can meet

A presence, sensed and shown at work, at home, or in the street.

Yet every name we see, shines in a brighter sun:

In Christ alone is Love full grown and life and hope begun.

The goal of this project is for us to be open and pay close attention to "where we see God" in every day life, and share those experiences with each other. We ask that you prepare a presentation board that explains and represents your discovery. It could include a paragraph, poem, photographs, embellishments, etc. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like. We would love to see at least 1 board per family. The boards will be displayed around the church so we can learn where & how others experience God. More details will come.

We truly hope that each of you will participate in this project. What you see and share can make a world of difference in someone’s life!
